Sacha and Giles launch HeadSmart at Devizes

HeadSmart: Be Brain Tumour Aware

Haine & Smith have pledged to support The Brain Tumour Charity’s HeadSmart campaign by displaying symptom cards and encouraging staff and patients to become brain tumour aware.

HeadSmart was launched in 2011 after concerns were raised by health professionals and the public about the length of time it took to diagnose brain tumours in children and young people in the UK.

To date, diagnosis times have been significantly reduced from over three months to 6.9 weeks. However, there is still more that needs to be done.

As an optician, Haine & Smith is well placed to support the work of HeadSmart as brain tumours often present visual symptoms and signs including abnormal eye movements and blurred or double vision.

Sacha Langton-Gilks (pictured above with Giles Smith) from Dorset lost her son David to a brain tumour when he was just 16. She explains: “If an optician spots raised brain pressure in a child, he or she will be sent for an urgent scan and seen by specialists. There will be no wait for a GP’s referral. Opticians are in the front line for getting our children to the right doctors faster.”
