Barry Smith

Co-founding partner of Haine & Smith, Barry lives with his wife Liz near Devizes. They have had three sons and their eldest, Giles became a partner of Haine & Smith in 2009.
After entering optics Barry gained a qualification in management. He has been an Adviser to the General Optical Council and a past examiner of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, as well as Chairman of the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians. He is currently a Council member of the Federation.
Outside of optics Barry is a member of the Salisbury Diocese Council for Mission and the Aldhelm Mission Fund group, Church Life Coordinator for All Saints’ Church Burbage, and a long-standing member of the Marlborough Rotary Club. Barry also enjoys playing tennis and bridge and is a season ticket holder at Southampton Football Club.
Sue Haine

Bsc(Hons) FCOptom
Co-founding partner and Optometrist, Sue studied at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in Cardiff. Together with Barry she launched Haine & Smith in February 1975, when they opened two practices in Westbury and Marlborough.
Sue who lives near Malmesbury, has a background steeped in horse racing; she married a jockey and her brother-in-law is a jockey and trainer. When Sue is not working in practice she loves playing the piano and spending time with her young grandchildren aged nine and seven.
Gary Walters
FBDO
Having started as a trainee dispensing optician, Gary now has over 30 years experience at Haine & Smith. As General Manager he is responsible for the day to day running of the partnership and when not at Head Office is frequently seen visiting the practices.
Gary is married with three children just completing their education. In his spare time he enjoys playing squash and is a keen follower of local rugby.
Keith Bottomley

Keith trained as an Optometrist at Cardiff University qualifying in 1974. He has been with Haine & Smith for over 30 years, becoming a partner in 1981.
He enjoys having the opportunity to meet many interesting people in his work and use the latest optical innovations and technologies. Like fellow Haine & Smith partners Jon and Angela, Keith is a member of the Wiltshire Local Optical Committee. Married with three children, outside of optics Keith’s great interest is art especially old books and prints.
Paul Compton
Bsc(Hons) MCOptom
An optometrist with a keen interest in contact lenses and children’s eyecare, Paul divides his time between working in practice and running Haine & Smith’s contact lens business, as well as overseeing the training and development of professional staff.
At home Paul enjoys spending time with his young family, is an active member of a local church in Bath – and when time allows enjoys cycling and sailing.
Jon Pillinger
Bsc(Hons) MCOptom
Jon has been married 32 years and lives with his family in Bradford on Avon. After Graduating from Cardiff University in 1979 Jon worked as an Optometrist in Swindon, Bath and Bristol. He also did sessional work at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
Jon joined Haine & Smith as an employee in 1985, becoming a partner in 1998. He is especially interested in providing excellence in eyecare and eyewear and in the early detection of treatable eye disease. Jon is past Chairman of the Wiltshire Local Optical Committee which represents eyecare professionals throughout Swindon and Wiltshire and continues to be a Committee member.
Mark Saunders

Bsc(Hons) MCOptom
Optometrist Mark qualified at City University, London in 1982 and worked for an optician in Reading before joining Haine & Smith. Over the course of the past 28 years Mark has enjoyed spending time testing and meeting patients at virtually all of the practices.
Mark and his wife Kay, an Optical Adviser at Haine & Smith, live in Marlborough and have three grown up children. Mark spends much of his spare time sailing and is a qualified Yacht Master (Offshore).
Angela Davey
FBDO
Operations Manager, Angela has worked in optics for 17 years. She joined Haine & Smith as a trainee dispensing optician at Calne practice and after qualifying in 1997 went on to manage a number of practices including Marlborough and Melksham.
With a passion for training and staff development, Angela has been a tutor for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians and is also a qualified NVQ assessor. She’s currently a member of the Wiltshire Local Optical Committee.
Giles Smith

BA(Hons)
Giles is 32 and as Head of Marketing spends his time between the Haine & Smith Head Office in Pewsey and out visiting the 19 practices.
Giles graduated from University with an Honours Degree in International Marketing and went on to travel extensively in South East Asia. While teaching English in Laos, Giles met and married his wife. A year later they came to the UK and live in Devizes with their four children.
