For patients with this condition, hard Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses hold tear fluid in the gap between the irregular (cone shaped) corneal surface and the rigid back surface of the contact lens. This ‘tear lens’ neutralises the irregular front surface of the eye, thereby providing good visual acuity. RGP lenses are available in extremely permeable materials, which can be worn safely for long hours. They are most frequently fitted as a first choice option for patients with Keratoconus.
