Meet the Partners

Sue Haine BSc(Hons) FCOptom
A co-founding partner and Optometrist, Sue studied in Cardiff at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology.
Together with Barry she launched the firm in February 1975, opening the first practices in Westbury and Marlborough.
Sue who lives near Malmesbury, has a background steeped in horse racing; she married a jockey and her brother-in-law is a jockey and trainer. When Sue is not working in practice she loves playing the piano and spending time with her young grandchildren.

Gary Walters
Starting out as a trainee dispensing optician, Gary has over 40 years’ experience at Haine & Smith and has responsibilities covering recruitment and helping members of the Haine and Smith team.
Gary is married with three children. In his spare time, he enjoys playing squash and is a keen follower of local rugby.

Jon Pillinger BSc(Hons) MCOptom
Jon is married and lives with his family in Bradford on Avon. After graduating from Cardiff University in 1979 Jon worked as an optometrist in Swindon, Bath and Bristol. He also did sessional work at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
Jon joined Haine & Smith as an employee in 1985, becoming a partner in 1998. He is especially interested in providing excellence in eyecare and eyewear and in the early detection of treatable eye disease. Jon is past chairman of the Wiltshire Local Optical Committee which represents eyecare professionals throughout Swindon and Wiltshire and continues to be a committee member.

Mark Saunders BSc(Hons) MCOptom
Optometrist Mark qualified at City University, London in 1982 and worked for an optician in Reading before joining Haine & Smith. Over the past 30 years Mark has enjoyed spending time testing and meeting patients at virtually all of the practices.
Mark and his wife Kay who also works at Haine & Smith, live in Marlborough and have three grown up children. Mark spends much of his spare time sailing and is a qualified Yachtmaster (Offshore). He is also a keen mountain biker and partakes in a bike ride every morning before work.

Angela Davey FBDO
Managing Partner, Angela has worked in optics for over 20 years. She joined Haine & Smith as a trainee dispensing optician at Calne practice and after qualifying in 1997 went on to manage several practices including Marlborough and Melksham.
With a passion for training and staff development, Angela has been a tutor for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians and is also a qualified NVQ assessor. In 2018 Angela graduated with her ILM Level 5 Leadership and Management Course.
In her rare moments of spare time Angela takes a keen interest in yoga, gardening and enjoys long walks.

Thomas Pears BSc(Hons)
Thom joined Haine & Smith as an IT Technician fresh from completing his honours degree in Computing and Mathematics back in 2006. Now, as Technical Director, he oversees the information systems in our practices, glazing lab and Head Office. His role was pivotal during the installation of our latest computer systems, a major operation which led to us winning ‘Software Practice of the Year’ at the 2014 Optician Awards.
Thom is a keen table tennis player and is an active committee member with the Devizes and District Table Tennis League. He also enjoys open water swimming and mountain biking.

Anna Lewin BSc(Hons) MCOptom
Anna, an optometrist, graduated from Manchester University in 2000 and after working in Bath joined Haine & Smith in 2002. Anna set up Haine & Smith’s ‘Visual Stress and Colorimetry Clinic’ initially in our Chippenham practice and later on in Regent Street in Swindon. This makes use of coloured overlays or lenses, which can help some people with reading. In the past Anna has worked as a Specialist Optometrist in the glaucoma clinic at Bath Royal United Hospital and is also past secretary of Wiltshire Local Optical Committee.
Anna lives in Bristol and is married with two young children, who keep her very busy! When time allows she enjoys cycling, yoga and running. She is a keen marathon runner and has participated in the London marathon to raise money for eye related charities.
