Sun Safety and Sunglasses in Summer

Now summer is finally on its way, we’re all looking forward to spending more time outdoors, enjoying picnics, beach trips and visits to our local parks. When preparing for a day outdoors, don’t forget to bring your sunglasses!

Most of us are now aware of the importance of using sunscreen to shield our skin from harmful UV rays, yet a surprisingly high percentage of people are unaware of the importance of protecting our eyes. This oversight can lead to various eye conditions and even long-term damage. Sunglasses are more than just a glamorous fashion accessory; they are essential for maintaining optimal eye health when outdoors.

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can lead to numerous eye problems, including uveitis, cataracts, macular degeneration and even cancer. The delicate tissues within and around the eyes are highly susceptible to damage from UV radiation. It can penetrate deeply into the eye and cause irreversible damage to its delicate structures over time.

Good quality, well-fitting sunglasses play a critical role in shielding our eyes from the sun. Not all sunglasses are created equal, though. When selecting a pair it’s essential to opt for lenses that offer adequate sun protection. Look for sunglasses with the British Standards CE mark BS EN ISO 12312 -1 2013 to ensure comprehensive protection for your eyes.

The style of the frame chosen is important for more than just aesthetic reasons. Larger frames and wraparound styles offer better coverage, shielding not only the front but also the side of the eyes and surrounding eye area from UV exposure. This is particularly relevant for those who spend extended periods outdoors, such as farmers, construction workers and gardeners, or those who engage in activities like water sports where UV rays can reflect on surfaces and intensify the impact on the eye.

Be sure to have your frame professionally fitted too. If it sits too far away from your face or slips forward, your eyes will still be exposed to the sun.

Sunglasses aren’t just about protecting from harmful rays, they also serve as a barrier against other environmental elements that can irritate and harm the eyes. Dust, pollen, sand and other debris can all pose threats to eye health. Sunglasses act as a shield, preventing these small particles from making direct contact with the eyes and causing discomfort or injury.

Wearing sunglasses can help to reduce the risk of developing photokeratitis, which occurs when the cornea is exposed to excessive UV radiation, leading to discomfort, inflammation, and temporary visual impairment. Symptoms may include, redness, sensitivity to light and headaches. By protecting your eyes, you can significantly reduce the risk of harm, allowing you to carry on enjoying sunny days without risking the health of your eyes.

Sunglass lenses are available with a range of tints and finishes, from fashion colours to specialist tints which provide better contrast and definition when performing specific tasks, such as driving or playing a particular sport. They can be supplied with or without a prescription.

In addition to wearing sunglasses, there are other measures you can take to protect your eyes in the warmer months. Wearing wide-brimmed hats can provide added shade and reduce the amount of direct sunlight reaching your eyes. Staying hydrated will help to maintain the moisture balance in your eyes and prevent dryness.

At Haine and Smith, we offer a large selection of sunglasses frames, with the option of adding prescription lenses. From DKNY, CAT and Guess, there is a frame for everyone!
