The Impact of Screen Time on your Eyes: What you Need to Know!

In our increasingly digital world, the average person spends a significant amount of time in front of screens - be it for work, education or leisure. However, prolonged exposure can adversely affect our eyes, leading to issues such as dry eye and eye strain.

Prolonged exposure to screens can result in a condition known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), which encompasses various eye-related problems. Two common issues are dry eye and eye strain. Staring at a screen reduces your blink rate, leading to insufficient eye lubrication. Consequently, eyes become dry, irritated, and tired. Headaches, blurred vision and difficulty focusing may also be experienced.

To alleviate problems with dry eyes, you can consider the following strategies - Regular breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Eye drops: You can purchase these from your optician or pharmacy. These can assist in keeping your eyes moist. Humidifiers: Using a humidifier can add moisture to the air, which helps to prevent dry eyes and irritation. Hydration: Drinking plenty of water can maintain overall body hydration.

Children under are particularly vulnerable to the effects of excessive screen time. Extended periods in front of screens have been linked to a greater prevalence of myopia (shortsightedness). This condition can progress rapidly during childhood, leading to children needing a stronger correction in their spectacles and even increasing the risk of some eye conditions later in life . Encouraging children to take regular breaks from screens, engaging in outdoor activities, and ensuring they have adequate lighting while using devices can mitigate these risks.

Extended exposure to blue light emitted from screens can also disrupt sleep patterns and contribute to digital eye strain. Blue light filter coatings on glasses can help to reduce glare and filter out harmful blue light, offering relief to those who spend long hours in front of screens. For those who use screens extensively, it may be advised to consider having a pair of occupational lenses. These lenses are optimised for the specific distance you view your screen, reducing strain and improving visual comfort.

While screens are an integral part of modern life, being mindful of their impact on our eyes is crucial. By implementing preventative measures and using appropriate tools, we can mitigate the negative effects of screen time and maintain healthy vision. Remember to take regular breaks, use protective coatings, and consider specialised lenses to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.
