Why a back-to-school eye test is essential

As the summer holidays draw to a close, parents across the country are busy preparing for the new school year. New uniforms, new shoes, and buying fresh lunchboxes are often at the top of the to-do list, but there is one important check that can be easily overlooked. Your child's eye test.

Good vision plays a vital role in a child's learning, development, and confidence at school. Yet many parents are unaware that children can have vision problems without showing any obvious signs. A routine eye test before the start of term can help to ensure your child is ready to learn, participate, and thrive in the classroom.

Why eye tests matter for school performance

Around 80% of classroom learning is visual. From reading textbooks and writing notes to viewing whiteboards, smartboards, and using digital devices, children rely heavily on their eyesight throughout the school day. If a child is struggling to see clearly, it can affect:

  • Reading and comprehension
  • Concentration and attention span
  • Handwriting and coordination
  • Confidence in and out of the classroom
  • Participation in sports and activities

In some cases, undetected vision problems can even be mistaken for learning difficulties or behavioural issues.

Children don't always realise that there is a problem

Unlike adults, children often assume that the way they see is completely normal. They may not realise that they should be able to see the board more clearly or read a book without strain. As a result, vision issues can go undetected for months or even years. Some signs that may indicate your child needs an eye test include:

  • Sitting very close to screens or televisions
  • Squinting when looking at distant objects
  • Frequent headaches
  • Rubbing their eyes regularly
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Holding books close to their face, and falling behind with reading

However, some children with vision problems show no symptoms at all, which is why regular tests are vital.

When should children have an eye test?

The NHS recommends that children have regular eye tests from an early age. Many eye care professionals suggest that the first eye test should take place before they start school (or sooner if you have any concerns about a child’s vision), and regular check-ups every one to two years, or as advised by your optometrist.

A back-to-school eye test is an ideal opportunity to check that your child's vision is developing as it should and that any existing prescription remains accurate.

More than just an eye test

A comprehensive eye test does far more than determine whether your child needs glasses. During the appointment, your optometrist can assess eye coordination and focusing ability, depth perception, overall eye health, and any signs of underlying eye conditions.

Early detection is key, particularly for conditions such as lazy eye (amblyopia) or squint (strabismus), where treatment is often most effective when started at a young age.

Choosing glasses your child will love

If your child does indeed need glasses, choosing the right frames can make all the difference. At Haine & Smith Opticians, we understand that children want eyewear that feels comfortable, looks great, and suits their personality. Our experienced teams can help to find frames that fit correctly, withstand everyday adventures, and encourage children to wear them with confidence!

Many children are excited to choose their first pair of glasses, and modern frame designs offer plenty of stylish options to help them feel comfortable and confident both in and out of the classroom.

Book before the rush!

The weeks leading up to the start of term are among the busiest times of the year for eye care appointments. Booking your appointment before the new school year can help avoid the last-minute rush and provide peace of mind that they’re ready for the year ahead.

A simple eye test could make a significant difference to your child's learning, confidence, and comfort.

Start the school year clearly

As you tick off your back-to-school checklist, don’t forget to include an eye test. Clear vision supports every aspect of your child's learning, helping them to make the most of every school day.
