How menopause affects the eyes and your vision

Mood swings, periods stopping, weight gain and hot flushes are the symptoms of the menopause we are most familiar with. However, you may be surprised to know that the menopause can also be responsible for insomnia, mental health problems and issues with our vision.

Dry eyes

In a recent survey, 6000 women were asked about their menopausal symptoms. One in four said they experienced dry eyes, making it one of the most common menopause symptoms. It is thought that a drop in oestrogen levels can make eyes feel sore, itchy, stinging and sensitive to light. Fortunately, there are simple and effective treatments to manage the effects of dry eye. If you are suffering, come in and have a chat with one of our opticians.

Blurred vision

Fluctuating hormones during the menopause can cause changes to vision, resulting in blurred vision and tired eyes. It is important to have regular eye tests to ensure that your vision is clear and sharp and that you are wearing the correct prescription.

Contact lens wearers sometimes mention that their lenses begin to feel uncomfortable, or that their vision is not as sharp as previously. This is thought to be due to subtle changes in the shape of the eye and changes to the eye’s chemistry. Our contact lens opticians may recommend a different material contact lens or modify the fit of your lenses.

Eyelashes and eyebrows

Whilst we can’t stop the menopause process, and we acknowledge that every individual’s experience will be different, there are steps which you can take to encourage optimal health during this natural stage of life.

Good diet and exercise - Eating well and moving more are essential ingredients for keeping menopause symptoms at bay. Not only will they contribute to your physical health, but also improve your wellbeing. Choosing the right foods, such as those rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol will see that you are achieving your goals and managing your symptoms.

Dry eye management - There are plenty of products available to ease the unpleasant symptoms associated with dry eye, from heat masks and cleaning products to eye drops and sprays. Our opticians can recommend bespoke solutions for you, depending on the severity and range of symptoms you experience.

Talk about it - The menopause has long been a taboo subject, but thanks to extensive research and more people in the public eye braving the subject, we are talking about it more and making it socially acceptable. Speak to someone if you are struggling with your symptoms.

Regular eye tests - As we all get older our vision weakens and it becomes more difficult for our eyes to focus. The menopause does not help with this! We recommend having regular tests. If you would like to speak to one of our friendly optometrists, contact your local practice today.
