Raise a glass with Haine & Smith this Christmas

“It’s Christmaaas!” Not only is this one of the most famous Christmas catchphrases of all time, but it’s also what we often say to one another as we reach for one more mince pie or pour another glass of mulled wine.

You wouldn’t be wrong! Especially after last month’s media launch by luxury reseller Vestiaire Collection, which used AI to dump tons of clothes into iconic stores as it unveiled its new “Think First, Buy Second’ campaign to champion sustainable fashion. https://www.marketing-interactive.com/Vestiaire-Collective-think-first-buy-second-sustainability-movement

Yes, Christmas is that celebration when healthy habits and regular routines go out of the window and are replaced with Secret Santa, carol concerts and meeting up with family and friends. We also have those raucous festive events and parties that get innocently dropped into the social calendar, and we know they will involve a December of late nights and lavish indulgence.

Party time

A show-stopping outfit is a must for any social occasion, and this is where a pair of festive frames will complete any party look. If you are not a fan of the novelty reindeer or snowman frames that make the rounds at this time of year, pop into one of our practices and view our collection of Christmas-coloured products. Choose from candy cane red or fir tree green if you want something stylish and seasonal, yet sophisticated enough to last you all winter. Saying that, a bit of sparkle never hurt anyone and it’s good fun to mix it up a bit throughout Christmas. You can wear a different pair to match either your brightly-coloured jumper for the big day lunch or your glitzy glad rags purchased specifically for the work party.

Holiday Hazards

Of course, with fun and festivity, there is also caution to be careful. Many of us will not think that our vision is vulnerable around Christmas, but with sharp toys, spiky Christmas tree branches and falling asleep in contact lenses, it is a time of year rife with eye injuries and accidents.

We’ve put together a short survival guide on what to look out for to keep your eyes safe this season.

1. Don’t rub your eyes - when chopping and preparing canapes, vegetables or the Boxing Day buffet; take care not to rub your eyes mid-garnish. We all use various ingredients to make recipes flavoursome in winter and foods like chilli, onions and spices can harm the eyes.

2. Avoid falling asleep in contact lenses - it’s a habit we try to avoid, but one that gets so easily forgotten when you are tired and want to crawl into bed. However, sleeping in your contact lenses is unsafe and can increase your chances of infection. We also do not recommend wearing party-themed lenses. We tailor regular lenses for each customer's eyes, and non-prescription products can damage vision.

3.Take off your make-up - if you have been rocking a smokey eye all evening with lashings of mascara, be sure to remove it all before hitting the pillow. We recommend using an ophthalmologically tested product so always read the label and buy from a reputable brand or company. If your eyes become dry after removing makeup or contact lenses, lubricate them with eye drops available in-store and online.

4. Wear goggles if cutting down a tree - the perfect tree is not easy to find, and if you aren’t happy with purchasing one from a local supplier, you may have decided to grow your own. If this is you, take care when it’s ready for chopping down and wear goggles. Your regular frames will not give you the protection that goggles will, and you can even get them prescribed.

5. Watch out for toys - Christmas morning is filled with excited children running around desperate to open their presents. It’s unlikely anyone will be thinking about eye health as they rip open their stockings from Santa. However, It is important to supervise and always make sure the toys are age-appropriate for the individual child. Plastic guns, magician wands and pirate’s swords all have the potential to be poked in the eye and cause injury.

6. Beware of flying fizz - there is no better sound than the cork popping on the first bottle of champagne on Christmas morning. That said cork usually disappears only to be found in the clear-up over the new year. However, on the unlikely occasion it makes it into someone’s eye, this can be painful and embarrassing. If you happen to be doing the honours this year, twist the cork a little before using your thumb to tease it out, and use a tea towel to cover the cork’s explosive launch.
